What to Do When iPod Freezes E-mail

The most common problem people email me about is that their iPod is frozen. They want to know what to do about it.

The first thing you need to check is to make sure the Hold switch isn’t enabled on the device. If the Hold switch is enabled, your iPod will not respond to any buttons you push. Make sure Hold is switched to Off.

If  your iPod is truly frozen, you will need to learn how to reset it. There are different steps required depending on the model you own.

1. If your iPod Classic has become frozen or is not responding, you may need to force it to reset.

To do so, simply press and hold the Menu and Center buttons simultaneously for about 6 seconds. The Apple logo will appear and should reset your iPod Classic.

2. Here are some things to try if your iPod touch is frozen and not responding.

Force quit program: Press and hold the Home button until the program you are using exits.

Turn it off: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until  the red slider appears. Drag the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

Reset iPod Touch: Press and hold Sleep/Wake + Home until the Apple logo appears.

Reset all iPod settings: On the Home screen choose Settings > General > Reset Reset All Settings.

Erase everything:  On the Home screen tap Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.

Hopefully with these steps, your iPod Touch responds and is now fixed.

3. How to reset iPod Nano if it is not responding or frozen.

Hold down the Center and Menu buttons simultaneously. The screen will start to melt away. Then you will see the Apple appear on the screen. The iPod has been reset sucessfully.

Music files should still be saved, but some customized settings may be lost.

If that doesn’t fix your problem, try a hard reset by holding down Menu and Play/Pause simultaneously for about 10 seconds. A hard reset will clean all data off the unit.

4. How to perform a hard reset on an iPod shuffle.

On both the 1st and 2nd generation iPod Shuffle, you can perform a hard reset on it by powering it down for 5 seconds then powering it back on. Also be sure you do not have the device attached to your computer or any other device while doing this. This is the only thing that can be done to reset it.
