Apple’s New OS Leopard and hardware requirement E-mail

Apple states the following basic Leopard system requirements, although, for some specific applications and actions (such as iChat backdrops) an Intel processor is required

* Processor must be any Intel, PowerPC G5 or G4 (867 MHz and faster)
* DVD drive (for installation of the operating system)
* At least 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM (1 GB) is recommended for development purposes)
* At least 9 GB of disk space available.

Features of Mac OS Leopard

1- Leopard is a true 64 bit OS and coupled with Intel’s Core Duo chips, it makes this a fast and highly flexible OS.

2- Time Machine- Built on top of “core animation” this feature lets you search files and data along a set time line and using 3D animations view data files all the way back to their starting thread and locate these threads in seconds. This one is very hard to explain without seeing it but it will be one of the most talked about features of this OS for a long time since it redefines how a person can work with files and data in a more visually pleasing way. In this area they also add an impressive auto back up feature that makes backing up the OS, files, images, video, etc extremely simple. This is the best auto back up system I have seen for PC’s, bar none.

3- A Complete Package- This means that they have even more integration of the OS and their own Apps which makes components of applications even more accessible throughout all types of programs and delivers a more powerful and flexible way to take, for example, videos and pop them into other apps such as email, documents, etc. This also means they are now including Boot Camp in the OS instead of making it a separate download.

4- Spaces- This is a concept in which a person can now have as many apps up and running yet they can literally switch between them and view them side by side or in quad screens at any given time. This is a very cool feature and makes working within multiple apps a simultaneous experience and takes full advantage of the multitasking capabilities of the new OS and Core Duo.

5- Spotlight- This integrated search engine can now search across a network or servers, as well as single machines.

6- Core Animation- As mentioned above, this is a powerful new architecture that gives real time animation to files and data structures and will rewrite the way people can and should work with data on a PC in the future.

7- Universal Access-Adding voice features to documents as well as Braille support, closed captioning and better navigation for people who are disabled.

8- New Mail features- There are three exciting new features that have creative elements to them in this new mail program. The Mac mail program is very good on its own, but they now add “stationary” features to it so that a person can easily add all types of stationary and graphics templates to email for a more visual experience. And since this is linked to apps like iPhoto and iMovie, it is extremely easy to drop images and video into these stationary elements to create highly visual emails. Another feature is the ability to take notes in email and this “notes” application is easy to use and has its own file system to make it easy to store and find your notes within the email database. And they have added the ability to highlight any item inside an email that is an “action” item and instantly tag is as a to-do item and it automatically shows up in your calendar or journal to do list.

9- Dashboard- There are already over 2500 Widgets available for Apple’s Dashboard but they have now added a new tool that is a simple template that lets users take “live” Web material and turn it into a Widget. For example, you could find the Web edition of a Dilbert cartoon, highlight it and clip it into the new template and automatically it becomes a Widget. More importantly, it is live data and in this case, the Dilbert Cartoon would be refreshed every day and will always be current in this new Widget.

10- iChat- This is already the best video conferencing system on the market today but they make it even more valuable by adding the ability to show images and movies inside an iChat session as well as share presentations created inside Keynote, Apple’s presentation system. And, one of the coolest features I have seen allows you to add any image or even video in the background so that while you might be in your office doing the iChat video conferencing, you can make it look like you are doing it from a beach in Hawaii, the streets of Paris or from the top of the Himalaya’s if you wish.
